Is it normal for a 14-year-old to be chubby? ›

Also, it's common for teens to gain weight quickly — and see their BMI go up — during puberty. Your doctor can help you figure out whether this weight gain is a normal part of development or whether it's something to be concerned about.

Jowls and chubby cheeks may be present even in a young and otherwise slim face. Often, however, they grow more prevalent with age. Essentially they can be viewed as collections of excess fat in a loose skin / muscle pocket comprising a facial compartment which may have deficient underlying bony support.

Weight loss can benefit people of all ages — even teens. Losing excess body fat can improve health and boost self-esteem and confidence. However, it's important for teens to lose weight the healthy way by making diet and lifestyle changes that nourish growing bodies and can be followed long term.

According to the CDC, most 13-year-old girls weigh between 76 and 148 pounds (lb). The 50th percentile for weight in this group is around 101 lb. This means that about 50% of girls this age weigh less than 101 lb.

After the 13th year of age, the growth changes slowed down. Between the ages of 14 years and 16 years, no or minimal changes (anterior changes of lower eyelids and the mentolabial crease) occurred, and after the age of 16 years, growth practically stopped.

The fat under our eyes starts to decrease the earliest, beginning in our twenties, and is followed in our thirties by the beginning of the loss of fat in the temples and parts of the cheeks. The superficial fat tends to persist unless there's major weight loss.

Most teens who weigh less than other people their age are healthy. People in your family may be small or thin, or you might be going through puberty later than some of your peers, or your body may be growing at a slower rate. Most underweight teens catch up and there's rarely a need to try to gain weight.

It is usually easier to lose weight as a teenager than as an adult due in part to metabolic differences. It is beneficial to achieve and maintain a healthy weight as a teen and carry it forward into adulthood.

As a child goes through puberty, their stores of body fat may change. For example, girls tend to gain more fatty tissue in the hips, thighs and buttocks, while boys may have an increase in fat on their stomachs.

Puberty. Increased hormones in a child's body during puberty (between the ages of 10 and 14 for girls and between the ages of 12 and 16 for boys) leads to growth and possible expansion of “baby fat” areas. This typically takes place in girls' belly, breast area and hips. Boys' shoulders will get broader.

It varies depending on shop, fit etc. As a generalisation I would say that size 14 is slightly overweight (but not obese), but on some people it would be a healthy weight.
