Mets Minors Recap: Brett Baty, Luke Ritter Mash in Syracuse (2024)

Sunday was a great day for the Mets minor league affiliates. For one of the rare times all season, each of the four teams won their games and they did it by a combined score of 20-4. Clearly, the pitchers put on a show, but there were some great offensive performances as well. In Syracuse, Brett Baty andLuke Ritter combined for three home runs to lead the Mets to victory, highlighting what was a perfect day in the Mets minors on Sunday.

Triple-A

Buffalo Bisons (30-27) 1, Syracuse Mets (34-22) 7

The Mets went on top early by tacking on two runs in both the second and third innings. The two runs in the second inning came on a single and a fielder’s choice, whereas the two runs in the third inning were solo shots by Baty and Ritter. The 4-0 Syracuse lead remained until the eighth inning when the Bisons scored their first run of the game, but the Mets responded with three more runs in the bottom of the inning. A two-run homer, the second of the day, from Baty and a solo shot from Carlos Cortes gave the Mets a 7-1 lead, which would hold for the remainder of the game.

It was a very clean game from the Syracuse pitching staff, who surrendered just one run on a long ball by Grant Hartwig. Otherwise, though, Joey Lucchesi had a fantastic start where he struck out six batters and allowed just one hit in five innings. Cole Sulser, Eric Orze, and Ty Adco*ck all contributed to the win as well with a scoreless inning each.

Double-A

Harrisburg Senators (30-21) 2, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (26-23) 3

The Rumble Ponies had a quiet game offensively, but they held on to win 3-2 in 11 innings. The scoring got started when Ryan Clifford hit a home run in the second inning, his second of the year for the Rumble Ponies. That put Binghamton in front 1-0, a score which would hold until the eighth inning. The game was tied when the Senators hit their own solo shot, but Binghamton retook the lead in the bottom of the inning when they scored on a wild pitch.

The Senators, down to their last inning, were able to score again in the ninth by drawing a walk with the bases loaded. That made it a 2-2 game which wound up having to be settled in extras. After neither team scored in the 10th, Nolan McLean drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th to walk it off for the Rumble Ponies.

Despite the quiet offensive day from the Binghamton lineup, the game was able to be won due to a phenomenal start from Brandon Sproat. In just his fourth Double-A start, Sproat allowed just two baserunners and struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings of work. It was Sproat’s third straight outing of seven innings and his second consecutive against Harrisburg. Nolan Clenney and Paul Gervase didn’t have as much success out of the pen, but Carlos Guzman finished the game off with two perfect innings of work. Between Sproat and Guzman, they were the two most responsible for Binghamton’s win.

High-A

The Cyclones scored in the first inning on a double-steal that saw Nick Morabito steal home. From that point on, Brooklyn would hold the lead and win the game. The Cyclones scored seven total runs including three in the eighth inning. Wilfredo Lara, Stanley Consuegra, and Mateo Gil all homered in the effort and four Cyclones totaled two or more hits. It was a thoroughly dominant effort against a Jersey Shore club that couldn’t muster a run.

The pitching staff was led by Kade Morris, who had yet another great start. He went 4 1/3 scoreless innings before Jake Stevenson, Jimmy Loper, and Brett Banks combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Stevenson was especially impressive, recording four of his five outs via the strikeout and nabbing his third win of the year.

Single-A

St. Lucie Mets (17-34) 3, Dunedin Blue Jays (25-26) 1

The Mets only racked up four hits all game, but that’s all they needed to defeat the Dunedin Blue Jays. One of those four hits, the biggest of the game, came off the bat of Colin Houck, who doubled and drove in two in the sixth inning. Those were the first runs of the game, putting the Mets ahead 2-0. Houck added another run with a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning and the Blue Jays added their only run in the bottom of the inning. Houck’s three RBIs gave the Mets a win, which have been hard to come by this season in St. Lucie.

Saul Garcia started the game for St. Lucie and allowed five baserunners in two innings but did a great job at run prevention by striking out four and keeping Dunedin off the board. Cristofer Gomez threw three perfect innings in relief after Garcia’s departure from the game, and Gomez wound up earning the win. Gregori Louis pitched two scoreless before Alan Perdomo pitched two innings and earned the save. Perdomo did allow a run, a solo shot in the eighth inning, but the St. Lucie lead was otherwise not threatened as they held on for the win.
